Tracking & Animal Behavior Apprenticeship
Over the course of five weekends, new doors of awareness will open through group learning as well as home study. We will work together, encouraging each other to put in “dirt time” and observational “sits” between our meet up weekends so that each of us get into the habit of embodying and increasing our new found skills while sharing information and evolving together as trackers. Presentations and excursions to varying local ecosystems and substrates will be a part of our learning process through a camp-like atmosphere of fun and encouragement.

Tracking Culture & Developing a Sense of Place
We are all trackers, though the majority of Human cultures have strayed from supporting this. Through group discussion, exercises, games, and storytelling, you will be welcomed back to your natural state and begin the process of living as a supported tracker. Together we will re-enter the world with new perspectives which enable our innate skills in observation to broaden our awareness of the world we are an integral member of.

“The Dance” - Full-bodied Learning Approach to Track Patterns, Baseline Gaits and Behaviors
Begin the study of who our non-human neighbors are, what sorts of things they are up to throughout the year, how to recognize the tracks and signs they leave behind, where to find these clues and the age old methods of returning this learning process to your own daily activities.
(if you have nearby Human neighbors, you may pre-warn them that they may witness you at times moving across your yard in the baseline gait of a non-human neighbor)

Scouting, Leading the Follow & Behavior Prediction
This is the stuff that really returns us to our bodies and gets our primal juices flowing. Learn how to put all the skills you’ve been honing into practice as you search for track and sign in the most likely locations for specific species and even known individuals. After an introduction to some trailing techniques, each participant will get a chance at leading a follow of a chosen animal. The art of aging tracks will be another helpful skill introduced to your “dirt time” practice.

Predator/Prey Relationships & Ethical Hunting or Trailing
Though vegetarians are also considered predators, this weekend’s camp theme will focus on relationships between local carnivores, omnivores and their faunal prey species. Our studies, discussions and field practice will take a deeper dive into the behaviors of the animals we wish to get a closer glimpse of while undetected whether they be fellow predators, or prey we hope to feed upon ourselves. Hunting is the ultimate sacred dance, and a chance to deepen your relationship with those who sustain you with reverence.

Tracking Review, Focal Species Reports & Mock Certification Evaluation
Our final weekend together will be a chance to share wisdoms, ask questions, hone techniques and celebrate connections. We will enjoy some tracking together while I hold a mock evaluation in the non-competitive tracker culture style we have been modeling throughout our apprenticeship. This will be helpful for those who wish to challenge themselves further by pursuing world recognized Tracker certification.
